Makeup Tip - Apply Concealer

When you are ready to apply your makeup, consider using a concealer. Concealer can help you hide
circles under your eyes, or flaws and blemishes on your skin. This can enhance the
overall look of your face. Look for a concealer that is 1-2 shades lighter than your normal
skin color / tone, especially if you want to hide dark circles underneath your eyes. Since
the under eye- area is already dark, you want to tone it down so that it is more or less the
same color as your skin tone. If you use a color similar to your skin tone, it will make the
area darker and will appear funny after your foundation is applied. When you apply the
concealer, do not stretch the skin. Use a small brush or cotton bud to apply concealer
underneath the eye area as this will prevent the skin from stretching. Concealer comes in
various forms such as in a stick, creams, bottles and powders.

Makeup Tip of the Day

This Tool is not apart of most women's beauty routine and it should be because it has the power to really make your eyes pop.  The eyelash curler is especially helpful to ladies whose lashes do not curl up very well.

The trick:  Briefly heat up the curler with a hair dryer, and then curl the ends of the lashes for several seconds.  Once this step is completed you will now follow up with the application of mascara to maintain the curler.

Important note:  A lot of women have run away from the eyelash curler because they made the mistake of using the eyelash curler after applying their mascara which caused many lashes to break or be pulled out.

The mascara can become stuck to the curler pad and then when used again at the next application the eyelashes can stick causing them to break or be pulled out.

Now you know the correct steps for using your eyelash curler, give it a second try and see what it a can do for your eyes.

Hope this tip of the day has helped.  It is a common mistake a hear a lot.

Applying Foundation - The Right Coverage

After you have covered any dark circles or blemishes with concealer (which we will talk about in another article) you are ready to apply your foundation.  Remembering our previous lesson, foundation types can vary from one another but hopefully you have decided on the right foundation for your skin type and tone.  Next you must decide how much cover you want to achieve.  There are several methods to consider.

If you only need minimal coverage you may want to choose either a mineral foundation or liquid foundation that comes in a pump form.  It may also be helpful to look for a foundation that states it can be used for light coverage.  Another option is to use a tinted moisturizer instead of a foundation.

With mineral foundation you can build coverage as needed.  You should always start with light coverage and build coverage as needed.  You can achieve this by using less powder on your first application.  Once you have made your first application of powder you should allow it to set for 30 to 60 seconds and evaluated it another light application is needed.  With liquid foundation (the thinner liquid foundations) you can again use a smaller amount of foundation and use a foundation brush or sponge to control the application.  By using a smaller amount and blending well you can achieve minimum or sheer coverage.  Again use the same principle as with the mineral foundation and evaluation your first application and only apply additional foundation if needed.
There are also ways to get minimal coverage with pressed powder foundations.  Pressed powder foundations are usually applied with a sponge and usually give a more full coverage application.  However, if you tend to like a pressed powder foundation but you want a lighter coverage you can wet the sponge and apply the foundation using a wet sponge.  This will give a more sheer coverage instead of the fuller coverage of the dry application.

Medium to full coverage can be achieved with mineral foundation, pressed powder foundations and thicker liquid or mousse foundations.  This may sound strange but even if you need full or medium coverage, use the same principles as would be used with light coverage.  Always start with less and build coverage as needed.  It is much easier to add coverage than to take it away if you put on too much.

Not everyone uses foundation but if you have uneven skin tone, pimples, freckles or age spots using a foundation can enhance your natural beauty.  When applying foundation either use a sponge, a foundation brush, kabuki brush or lastly your fingers.  Generally start applying from the center and work your way out, blending well as you go along.  Make certain you are blending well around the edges of your face so that are no visible lines.

Even though we talked about this in the previous article it is important to remember that your foundation should be almost an exact match of your skin color.  If you are blending your foundation deep into your neckline just to avoid that line of color you are probably not using the right color.  Don’t be shy.  Have a consult done or ask for samples if possible.

Makeup Tips - Your Foundation

Everyone has their own natural beauty.  Some have a harder time than others finding and flattering that natural beauty.  It can be difficult, I agree, but let’s make it easier.  Ladies have been using makeup to enhance their beauty for centuries.  Although times and makeup have changed over the years the reasons for makeup have not changed all that much.

These days the cosmetic industry is booming and it can be overwhelming to walk through the plethora of products.  With all the products out there on the market today where does one start?  It is foundation, liquid or mineral, that provides the case for most women’s beauty regimen.

Not all foundation is created equally and the variety of foundations can vary by ethnicity and skin type.  We must also remember that my skin and your skin are different and we each have our own needs.  Next there is where to buy your foundation since you can buy it a drugstore, in a department or online.

The first thing we must consider when choosing a foundation is what type of foundation works best for your skin type.  What condition is your skin?  Do you have dry or flaky skin?  Maybe you have oily skin or maybe you have combination skin.  If you are not sure what skin type you have it maybe best to talk to consultant.

After determining your skin type, you have to decide which foundation formula would best suit your needs.  If your skin is dry, hydrating or moisturizing foundation formulas are great choices to provide a great base for your beauty regimen.  Oil control or oil-free foundations work best for the oily skin.  And if you are prone to breakouts, look for formulas that cater to acne-free and oil-free.  When you have combination skin, you need to find a foundation formula that would suit both oiliness and dryness.

Pick two or three shades that you think might best suit your skin tone.  Fair skin might require a foundation with rosy undertones while a darker complexion might need something more yellow-based in color.  Once you have picked two or three colors apply the foundation shades at various places along your jaw line.  Your skin in this area is most true to the type of makeup color you need.  Whatever you do, don’t apply the makeup on your wrist or hand because these are not optional areas to best determine the foundation’s tone and color.  Natural light is best to look how well the foundation blends in with your skin.  Your best selection would be the one foundation that is virtually undetectable on our skin.  You should be wearing your makeup, not the makeup wearing you.  If you are still having trouble choosing a foundation shade look for companies that maybe able to do custom blending.

Be sure to think about what you want to out of your foundation.  Do you want light and natural or something that makes your skin more luminous for evening events?  Do you want a satin or matte finish?  Decide what role your makeup will play in your daily life and activities and choose the best foundation that fits that role.

How to do Perfect Smokey Eyes

1. Comb your eyebrows and fill it in with an eye shadow color that is the same as
your hair color.

2. Take your highlighting brush and use either a white, gold or beige color. Apply
this color underneath your eyebrow.

3. Take your eye shadow applicator brush and dip it into grey eye shadow. This you
will apply all over your eyelid or just in the fold of your eye.

4. Take a tissue and clean your eye shadow applicator brush. Take the same brush
and dip it into black eye shadow. Apply the eye shadow in the fold of your eye
but at the outside corner of your eye – making a little V as you go downwards to
the outside corner of your eyelid.

5. Take your eye shadow blending brush and blend in the black eye shadow that you
applied.

6. Take a black eye liner pencil, making sure that it is not too sharp and draw a line
just above your eyelashes. If you do it on yourself, close one of your eyes and
look with the other eye in the mirror so that you can see what you are doing.
Place your finger at the outside corner of your eye and softly pull your eyelid so
that it is easier to apply your eyeliner. Draw the line almost into your eyelash line.
Do it on both eyes and then take your eyeliner brush, dip it into black eye shadow
and just “smear” the color gently over the eyeliner line. This will soften the look.

7. Take some black mascara and apply one or two coats onto your eyelashes.

8. For a very dramatic look, you might want to put on some individual lashes and
finish that off with a touch of mascara.

9. A smoky eye do not always have to be black, you can use various color such as
brown, plum, etc. Just make sure that you stay in the same color chart when doing
it with another color. Buy eye shadows that come in a trio of the same color.

Corrective Makeup on Different Eye Shapes

Eyes that are close to each other

The goal is to make the eyes appear more apart from each other.

Corrective Steps:
1. Apply a white, beige or golden eye shadow colour onto the eyelid and also under
your eyebrows.
2. Apply any other natural eye shadow colour in the fold of your eye, but
concentrate on the outer corners of your eye. The eye shadow colour must
become gradually darker to the outside corners of your eyes.
3. Apply a highlighting colour in the inside corner of your eye.
4. Eyeliner must only be applied from the middle of your eye to the outside corner
of your eye.

Eyes that are far apart from each other

The goal is to make the eyes appear closer to each other.
Corrective Steps:

Great Looking Skin at Any Age!

As we get older our skin's anatomy and physiology change and we should take steps to adjust our skin care regime.  Skin care is important at every age from our 20's to our 40's and beyond.  The key is to understand your skin and how natural skin care works to help us achieve our goals.

We all must invest time and care with our skin if we want it to stay younger looking.  An important notes I must share is that even the most expensive skin care products can turn back time that why is it important to start out right and adjust as you age.  There are steps that we can all take to make our skin look healthy and vibrant and stay wrinkle free for longer.

Understanding the basic functions of our skin is an important step in looking after it properly.  You may not know it but our skin is actually our body's largest organ and comprises three major layers.  Lets talk about each layer of skin.  We will start with the Epidermis:

This layer has five sub-layers; the outer layers consists of mainly dead skin cells which are continuously shed and replaced by cells beneath.  The epidermis is also responsible for 'water proofing' your skin, protecting your skin from potential invasion of microbes and generate new skin cells which move from the deep layer of the epidermis to the outer layer, where they are eventually shed.

The Dermis:  Is the middle layer of the skin and is composed of connective tissue containing collagen and elastin.  The dermis is thick in the palms and soles and very thin in the eyelids.  It contains blood vessels, nerves, glands and hair follicles.

The Subcutaneous Layer:  This layer consists of areolar and adipose tissue.  Fibers from the dermis extend down into the subcutaneous layer and anchor the skin to it.  The subcutaneous layer, in turn, attaches to the underlying tissues and organs.

There are many factors that affect of fast our skin ages.  Some of these factors we can control and some we cannot.  Factors we cannot change are genetic factors but there are a lot of factors we can change like exposure to sunlight, smoking, and diet.  In general, paler skin tends to wrinkle faster than darker skins, which are protected by increased amounts of pigment and lipids.

Another factor we can help but not change is our age.  We know a little about our skin but what changes as we age is how are skin functions with age.  Our skin functions very differently at 20 compared to when we are 60.    So it makes sense we should treat our skin differently as we age.  So lets talk a little about how we should treat our skin over the years.

Our 20's:  Our 20's typically show us the best in our skin.  Most say goodbye to acne and welcome a more radiant, youthful glow and the epidermis is well toned.  Even though our skin looks good in our 20's it is not a good idea to be complacent in our skin care regimen.  In our 20's skin cell renewal drops by up to 28%, dead skin cells are not as easily shed and external factors are starting to have a greater impact, leaving your skin slightly duller.

It is very important to protect our skin from the sun.  Up to 80% of all aging can be directly related to the amount of sun exposure we allow.  Some things we can do to help decrease our exposure to the sunlight is to avoid the mid-day sun, or cover up your skin if you need to be out in the sun.  Use a good sunscreen to keep UVA rays from penetrating our skin to damage collagen fibers and elastin coils in our skin.

another key thing we can do is avoid smoking or quite smoking.  Smoking inhibits oxygen from getting to the outer layer of your skin and has a premature aging effect.  It can also cause fine lines around the mouth.

Our 30's:  By the time we get to our 30's our skin cell turnover has slowed even more.  Environmental damage form pollution, smoke and sunlight are starting to take their toll on the dermis, causing collagen fibers to loosen so that the skin starts to loose it tone and develop fine lines and wrinkles.  You may notice those laugh lines don't bounce back as fast as they once did.

Hopefully, by this point you have developed a daily skin care regime that involves exfoliating (2-3 times per week), cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection.  It is also important to make sure your diet is well balanced and includes fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and other lean proteins which are high in antioxidants such as Vitamin A, B, C and E.  Antioxidants fight free radicals in your body and help the skin repair itself by producing the enzymes that stabilize collagen production, and keep skin moist and healthy.  You can help this process by including a moisturizer that includes antioxidants in the ingredients.

Alcohol should be consumed in moderation because it can deprive your skin of vital nutrients and may cause your facial blood vessels to become dilated leading to permanent, red spider like veins on your cheeks and in men if often appears across the nose.

SLEEP AND HYDRATION are the keywords we should remember in our 30's.

Our 40's:  In your 40s, collagen fibers decrease in number, stiffen, break apart, and form into a shapeless, matted tangle. Elastic fibers lose some of their elasticity, thicken into clumps, and fray. The result is the skin forms crevices and furrows known as lines and wrinkles. In addition, loss of fat in the subcutaneous layer leaves your skin more fragile, whereas the dermis will continue to lose its elasticity. A rich nourishing night crème, should become a vital part of your skin care regime.

During this time the outer layer of the epidermis starts to grow even thicker, as dead skin cells hang around for longer. If you are not already using an exfoliant regularly, now is a good time to get into the habit of exfoliating your skin regularly using a facial scrub 2-3 times a week. You could also use a cream containing Rose oil, Jojoba oil or similar, as these contain natural AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) and to help remove dead skin cells.

As deeper wrinkles start to form, you may wish to use a complete skin care system, which systematically helps you to nourish and moisturize your skin on all levels. Choose natural skin care products for your daily skin care regime, as you do not want to introduce unnecessary toxins into your system by using products full of unpronounceable chemicals.

Age 50 and above:   As we reach our 50s and beyond, the hair and nails grow more slowly. Langerhans cells (involved in the immune response, dwindle in number, thus decreasing the immune responsiveness of older skin. Decreased size of sebaceous (oil) glands leads to dry and broken skin that is more susceptible to infection.

After the menopause, decreased estrogen levels mean that skin will lose its plumpness and tone, and it may be left dry, itchy and more sensitive to allergens.

At this stage in your life it is important to take that extra care of your skin’s health. Mature skin is more fragile, prone to injury and infection and bruises easily. As if this was not bad enough, it also takes longer to heal. Taking care of your skin will reduce the aging effect; keep it healthier as well as more resistant to injury and infections.

It is inevitable that we all age; skin will lose elasticity and slowly the signs of aging will become apparent with brown spots, and fine lines and wrinkles. However, it is important to note that how you treat your skin in your twenties will forever be apparent later in life. Beginning a preventive maintenance skin care program in your twenties will help maintain a youthful glow well into your 40's, 50's and beyond.

Happy skin care.  Please let us know if you have questions or article suggests.  Visit us at www.morgans-boutique.com.
